Facial Treatment

What is HIFU?

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that utilizes ultrasound energy to target specific layers of skin and subcutaneous tissue. In facial aesthetics and fat reduction, HIFU works by delivering focused ultrasound waves deep beneath the skin's surface, creating controlled thermal injury.

How it works

    • HIFU devices emit concentrated ultrasound energy.

    • This energy precisely targets specific depths, such as the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer, which is also targeted in surgical facelifts.

    • The targeted tissue heats up rapidly, causing cellular damage.

    • This stimulates the body's natural healing process, promoting collagen production and tissue contraction.

    • For fat reduction, the HIFU energy destroys fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body.

HIFU FAQs

Who is HIFU appropriate for?

HIFU is an extremely diverse treatment that is appropriate for many people.

In younger individuals it can be used to sculpt the face by creating lift at different points, such as the eyebrows and cheekbones. It can be used to eliminate pockets of fat, such as those around the chin, to create a more defined jawline. It can also be used for fat loss in any other area of the body.

In older individuals HIFU can be used to reduce lines and wrinkles and tighten and lift the skin. It is an excellent alternative to injectable biostimulators such as Radiesse and Sculptra for those who do not want injectable treatments. â€‹â€‹

How many treatments will i need?

This depends on the type of treatment, fat pocket size if for fat loss, skin quality and laxity if for improving skin quality. Some people will only need 1 treatment whereas others will need 2 treatments, 3 months apart, for optimal results.

How long do the results last?

HIFU creates lasting results, of around 1 year after the initial treatment/s

Is HIFU painful?

Unlike many HIFU machines, the Ultraformer 3 machine at Dr Horlick Aesthetics delivers to transformative results with minimal discomfort. Numbing cream is not used as the ultrasound waves are targeting structures that are too deep for a topical anaesthetic to reach, but it is also not required with the Ultraformer 3. The energy level can be adjusted to ensure comfort for all patients throughout the treatment, whilst maintaining results.

Is HIFU dangerous?

HIFU has been around for decades and as such there is a lot of data proving its safety and effectiveness. Due to its targeted nature, when applied appropriately and to the correct depths, HIFU is very safe. It is important to find a skilled practitioner, who had a deep understanding of anatomy, to ensure that the procedure is performed correctly to maximise results and minimise the risk of complications.

Is there any downtime?

There is no downtime at all following HIFU, making it a truly lunchtime treatment. There will be no external signs that a treatment has been performed, other than some mild, temporary redness of the skin in some individuals. Many people will have no external signs. â€‹â€‹

The process

Before treatment

At your consultation your goals will be discussed and the desired treatment area assessed. Dr Horlick will recommend a treatment plan based on this assessment. A consent form will be completed and before photos taken. You will now be ready for your treatment.

During treatment

The treatment area will be marked and the skin cleaned by Dr Horlick. You will then be ready to commence your treatment.

After treatment

You will be advised of the aftercare instructions and provided with a digital copy of them. The consultation and treatment time is around 45-60 minutes.

Results

Some people will see an immediate, temporary, result, caused by the skin contracting. Your final results will develop gradually over a 3-month period. Results last for around 12 months, depending on a variety of individual and lifestyle factors.
